DEA, Hennebery Eddy Architects, and Mortenson participated in the 2025 Portland CANstruction competition, creating a “Helpful Hungry Hippo.” The sculpture is comprised of 3,181 cans made up of proteins, fruits, vegetables and legumes, all of which were donated to the Oregon Food Bank after the competition. Our design earned the Best Original Design (top award), Structural Ingenuity, and People’s Choice awards, and our Mission Statement was:
“Hippos are not the only ones who go hungry! ‘Helpful Hungry Hippo’ turns playful nostalgia into purposeful action. Our hungry hippo reminds us that hunger is no game – highlighting the contrast between fun and food insecurity. Through creativity, teamwork, and a whole lot of cans, we’re chomping down on hunger one bite at a time.”
