Freedom Park

Palm Desert, CA

DEA provided design services for a new 23-acre park site. “Freedom” and “patriotism” were the themes that were evaluated for further development of elements within the park. The site includes three lighted ballfields, two soccer fields, two sand volleyball courts, two lighted tennis courts, a skateboard plaza and stage, a playground area, picnic shelters, a proposed day care facility, a restroom/concession building, a fitness trail, open space landscaping including perimeter plantings for screening and the buffering of noise, and a park entry treatment that expands on the theme of “freedom” through patriotic colors and icons. As the project’s lead design coordinator, DEA’s landscape architect worked with the City of Palm Desert to develop a comprehensive design that communicated the project theme as well as met the project budget. DEA’s civil engineering group was also part of the design team, as were an electrical engineer and a building architect as subconsultants. The conceptual planning and design development stage took place over the course of approximately two years as DEA worked closely with the city and the Coachella Valley Recreation and Parks District. The site also is used by the Desert Sands Unified School District.
