East R Street Improvements

Tacoma, WA

DEA provided engineering services for reconstruction of 1,000 feet of residential roadway in an aging neighborhood. We tailored the design to address the goals of the Tribe’s Master Plan, including boulevard-style sidewalks, infrastructure for a future communications and electrical systems, decorative lighting, and undergrounding of some utilities.

This project discharged directly to two culturally significant streams for the Tribe: First Creek, and the Puyallup River. DEA worked closely with the Tribe and the city to upgrade the existing decrepit drainage systems to provide much needed water quality treatment to help improve both of those treasured streams.

DEA’s biologists and ecologists developed and submitted local and federal environmental documentation including a biological assessment and NEPA categorical exclusion for submittal to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. DEA prepared design drawings, costs estimates, and construction specifications to meet an aggressive schedule and obtain funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. DEA then assisted the Tribe with the bidding process, contractor selection, and construction administration. The project has greatly improved the Tribe’s government block.
