Sea-Tac Bagwell 3D Laser Scanning/Modeling
In response to federal security regulations for baggage handling and screening, the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport needed to install new baggage conveyors and security scanners in the bagwell. In addition to baggage and cargo, this underground area holds a series of HVAC conduits, utility pipes and telecommunication lines, among other infrastructure elements.
The existing as-builts were a hodgepodge of schematic drawings, construction plans, and as-built drawings that spanned a 60-year period. DEA provided updated as-builts of the 120,000-square-foot bag well for construction purposes.
DEA responded by using a combination of state-of-the-art, high-accuracy laser scanning and conventional surveying methods to create 3-D models and 2-D composite drawings charting the placement and route of all pipes and tubes with at least a one-inch diameter.
DEA's ground-breaking work on this project set new standards for the industry and now serves as a model for other major airport renovation projects throughout the U.S.
