Albany Multimodal Transportation Center
The Albany, Oregon, Multimodal Transportation Center project restored a local cultural treasure, the historic Albany Train Depot Building, and provided the region with a new multimodal transportation center.
The Albany Transportation Center provides intercity and interstate passenger rail service, local and regional bus service, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, auto parking, and drop-off areas. More importantly, the renovation of the Albany train station reinvigorated the sense of community for residents, and reconnected previously isolated community neighborhoods and districts, linking the past to the future.
DEA was the prime consultant for the project, which included seismic rehabilitation of the depot building. Built in 1908, the building was constructed using un-reinforced concrete blocks. Strengthening included installation of steel reinforcement grouted into the hollow cells of the concrete block, a new plywood roof diaphragm over the existing wood roof truss framing, a new interior shear wall and positive attachment of the walls to the roof framing and foundation.
This project also included design of the new railroad platform canopies, transit center shelter structures and site retaining walls. In addition, improvements were made to adjacent highways, intersections, access roadways, multiuse and pedestrian pathways, and major utility infrastructure serving the project area.
DEA provided structural engineering for the seismic rehabilitation of the Depot building, project management, preliminary engineering, final engineering, construction engineering, and right-of-way clearance for this project.
