Route 9A Reconstruction

When Route 9A was damaged during the attacks on 9/11, it severely hindered mobility in lower Manhattan.

The reconstruction of this major thoroughfare, also known as the West Side Highway or West Street, is funded and managed through a unique collaboration between the Federal Transit Administration and the New York Department of Transportation, and is the first time a highway project has come under the FTA’s project management oversight program. DEA is assisting the FTA by monitoring the progress of projects, budgets, and compliance of completed work with approved project management plans.

Just west of the World Trade Center site, this project is a multi-modal, six- to eight-lane urban arterial highway, a continuous Class I bikeway and continuous walkway. It carries cars, trucks, buses, bicycles, pedestrians, and various recreational users.
